TheFundacion Solidaridad (Solidarity Foundation) was established in thelate 1970s by the Chilean Bishops to help market handcrafts and offersupport to the families of some of the thousands of political prisonersarrested by the Chilean army during the military crackdown followingthe overthrow of Socialist President Allende. Although the Pinochetdictatorship is no longer in power, the economy is still struggling andwomen in the barrios still gather to support each other and to sew andapplique textile products like arpilleras, dolls, and clerical stoles.
